A trailblazing contest official, McPhilomy has exemplified professionalism and knowledge of the game in eight different sports. She has officiated over 3,300 high school contests, including 19 FHSAA State Championships for five different sports.
McPhilomy began her officiating career as a collegiate intramural official during her time of study at the University of Alabama. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, the Jacksonville native returned home and quickly made a name for herself, collecting a list of firsts. McPhilomy served on the first all-female crew for an FHSAA football contest, the first three-woman crew for an FHSAA basketball contest, and the first all-female crew in an NCAA men’s basketball game. Moreover, in 2010, she was one of 15 women who officiated the first International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Women’s World Championship in Sweden. Three years later, she officiated in the Championship again in Finland.
McPhilomy has been named President of the North Florida Official’s Association and the Southern Association of Basketball Officials, as well as Commissioner of the First Coast Lacrosse Official’s Association. She spends her time as a field clinician for football, boys’ lacrosse, and basketball. She has been the football rules interpreter for the NFOA for 15 years and has presented at a number of FHSAA Officials Leadership Conferences. McPhilomy helped create the FHSAA football evaluation program, along with the FHSAA flag football rule book. Additionally, she has assisted in the development of FHSAA official’s exam questions, and she authored the book Football Rules: Simply Stated.
Not only a prominent figure in training officials, McPhilomy has been instrumental in recruiting new officials as well. She created the curriculum “Sports Officiating” for high school students, which has resulted in approximately 12 new, young officials. McPhilomy also offers a scholarship at the University of Alabama, which pays for the initial costs for two intramural officials to become high school officials.
The meritorious referee was honored as the Boys Lacrosse Official of the Year in 2011 and in 2014, she became a National Intramural Recreational Sports Association Hall of Fame Inductee as a flag football official. Currently, McPhilomy teaches health and physical education at Sandalwood High School, on top of coaching cross country and track & field.
