Frequently Asked Questions

Postseason Qualifying ("State Series")

Who advances to the postseason/playoffs?

In all sports (with the exception of Football and Competitive Cheerleading), teams that have elected to participate in the FHSAA post-season prior to the beginning of a season are eligible to qualify their way into and/or compete in their respective District Tournament/Event. The District Tournament/Event is seen as the first stage of the post-season for each sport. The District Tournament/Event Champion will then advance to the Regional or State Championship round. In some team sports, additional spots may be secured through a team's regular season FHSAA Power Ranking. For individual sports, when an individual's team does not qualify as a whole, additional spots may be secured through their individual finish.

Advancement procedures to the Regional Tournament and subsequently the State Championship Events are unique to each sport and can be found in the Administrative Procedures located on the Rules & Publication page.

Who advances to the postseason/playoffs in Football?

For classes 1R (Rural), qualification for the State Series is based solely on a team's final FHSAA Power Ranking from the regular season. In Classes 1S-4S and 1M-4M, automatic qualification for the State Series is provided to each District Champion, which is based on a regular season round robin of head to head competition against District opponents. Remaining tournament at large spots will be secured based on a team's final regular season FHSAA Power Ranking. For more information on advancement in the sport of Football, please review the Administrative Procedures Manual 3.3

Who advances to the postseason/playoffs in Competitive Cheerleading?

Teams that have elected to participate in the FHSAA post-season prior to the beginning of the season are eligible to compete in their respective Regional Event. Regardless of their Region, all teams will be divided into a division based on their team makeup and performance type. In order to advance to the FHSAA State Championship Event, a team will need to secure a predetermined qualifying number at their Regional Event. For more information on advancement in the sport of Competitive Cheerleading, please review the competitive cheerleading sport manual.

How are Classifications for my school determined, and how do I access them?

Classifications, also referred to as District Assignments throughout various FHSAA publications, are determined by sport and are based solely on school enrollment size and geography. Set for two years, Policy 12 of the FHSAA Handbook provides more information about each sport. To view current classifications, please visit the sport page and click on the link labeled "Classifications" in the top right.

Postseason Hosting

Who gets to be the host in the District rounds?

The District Tournament/Event host is determined by all competing teams in that District prior to the start of the season. Members of each District are required to meet annually to vote on this decision to determine a host site/location. Some Districts may choose to host the entire tournament event all at one site, while others may choose to alternate sites/locations for each round until a District champion is crowned.

Who hosts a Regional meet/event in individual sports?

For individual sports, Regional event sites are selected from propsosals that have been submitted to the FHSAA prior to the start of season.

Which team is going to host in the Regional rounds of the playoffs for team sports?

Regional round hosting in the sports of baseball, basketball, flag football, lcarosse, soccer, softball, beach volleyball, boys volleyball, girls volleyball and water polo will be based on the FHSAA Power Rankings. In all Regional rounds of these sports, the higher seed will be designated as the host. For more clarification on this and other hosting procedures, please review the administrative procedures located on the Rules & Publication page.
