Darryl Lamont Burrows, a prominent figure in high school basketball coaching, graduated from Piper High School in Sunrise, Florida, in 1977. He then pursued his Bachelor of Science in Education at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, graduating in 1981. Burrows embarked on his teaching career at Piper High School from 1981 to 1984 before transitioning to Dillard High School in 1984. In 1994, Burrows was appointed as the head coach of the Dillard High School Boys Basketball Team. During his tenure as the head coach of Dillard High School, spanning an impressive 28 years, Burrows has achieved remarkable success. He led the Dillard basketball team to numerous victories, with an outstanding overall record of 675 wins and 175 losses. His coaching legacy is solidified by his exceptional achievement of leading Dillard to 12 State Appearances, seven State Titles (1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003, 2007-2008, 2015-2016, and 2016-2017), three State Runner-Ups,(1995-1996, 2018-2019, 2019-2020) and two Final Four appearances (1997-1998 and 2006-2007).
Burrows is the only coach in Broward County to hold four consecutive FHSAA State Championship titles at a single school. He also clinched an impressive total of 13 District Titles (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2016, 2017, and 2020) and 12 Regional Titles (1995, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020). At the end of the 2020-2021 season Burrows retired as the Head Coach of the Dillard Boys Basketball Team.
Burrows has the most appearances and championships in the BCAA (Broward County Athletic Association) since its inception with seven championships and five Runner-Ups during his tenure as head coach.
His remarkable success on the court has not gone unnoticed as he has been recognized with prestigious awards including Boys Basketball Coach of the Year by the Miami Herald and Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel in multiple years (2000, 2001, 2008, 2016, and 2017). Additionally, he was named Coach of the Year All- Sports by the Miami Herald in 2000 and Boys Coach of the Year by the Miami Herald in 2017. In 2008, Burrows was recognized as the BCAA Northern Division Boys Basketball Coach of the Year. He was also named the Florida Dairy Farmers Boys Basketball 5A Coach of the Year in 2007-2008 and the Florida Dairy Farmers Boys Basketball 7A Coach of the Year in 2016-2017.
Burrows is known for his coaching excellence, having been selected as one of only two male coaches from Florida to ever coach in the McDonald’s All-American Game. He coached the 2009 McDonald’s All-American East Squad, showcasing his expertise at a national level. He further expanded his coaching experience by traveling to Beijing, China, where he coached at the 2006 NIKE All Asia Camp. In 2013, Burrows coached The NIKE Global Challenge Games in Washington D.C., demonstrating his ability to lead top-tier basketball talent. His coaching prowess extended to international competitions as well, as he served as a court coach for the USA Men’s Basketball 16U team in 2019. Burrow’s achievements also include being one of only two coaches from Florida to have coached in the Jordan Brand Classic in 2016 held in New York.
In 2017, Darryl was inducted into The Broward Sports Hall of Fame, acknowledging his significant contributions to sports in the region. His impact on basketball and coaching excellence was further recognized when he was inducted into the Old Dillard Museum in 2019. Additionally, he received the Orange Bowl Committee Excellence in Service Award (Sports) in 2000 for his dedication and service to sports.
Burrow’s career is marked by a series of remarkable achievements and contributions to the world of basketball coaching. His commitment to developing young talent and achieving success at various levels of competition has solidified his reputation as a respected figure in the basketball community. Burrows has coached several notable athletes who have gone on to achieve success at higher levels of competition. Some of his former alumni players include NBA player Keyon Dooling, NFL player Chris Gamble, NFL player Pat Sims, and NBA Player Raiquan Gray. Additionally, he has coached numerous past and present college players who have excelled in their collegiate careers. Beyond coaching basketball, Burrows finds solace in traveling and relaxing at home. His favorite saying “Good as done” reflects his confidence and determination in achieving success both personally and professionally.
Burrows is Married to Cassandra Kearson-Burrows, and they have three children, Rubyne, Catoddra and Darryl and one grandson, Cameron Alexander.
