Hall of Fame
Michael Kypriss has coached high school tennis for 43 years and counting and has won a combined 17 FHSAA State Championship titles including 11 girls tennis and six boys tennis championships. He has coached his teams to 14 FHSAA State Runner-Up finishes and 28 Regional titles.
Before becoming a professional tennis coach, Kypriss was a 1973 First Team All-American quarterback at Miami Norland Senior High School and he played at the University of Kentucky before a career-ending injury occurred.
Kypriss has coached at Miami Killian Senior High School, Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School, and Nease High School. Kypriss has an impressive career record of 1305-68. Coach Kypriss has sent more than 250 tennis players on scholarship in both Division 1 & 2 and has coached 35 High School All-Americans.
He has privately coached four-time Men’s Doubles Major Champion Jean-Julien Rojer who attended UCLA and is currently on the ATP Tour. Julian won two French Open Titles (2014 in mixed doubles, 2022 in men’s doubles), won at Wimbledon in 2015, and the US Open in 2017.
Other professional players he has coached and inspired to go into coaching are Jack Brasington who played at Texas and reached #113 on the ATP Tour and is the Head Coach at St. Thomas University in Houston and Paige Yaroshuk Tews who also attended UCLA, competed on the WTA Tour and is in her 23rd year as Head Women’s Coach of the University of Miami. Kypriss also coached Alexander Knight who attended the University of Michigan and is competing on the Futures ATP Tour.
Coach Kypriss served on the FHSAA Tennis Advisory Board seven times as Chairman and is also a USPTR Certified High-Performance Coach and USPTR Certified Pro 1 member. Kypriss has been awarded the NHSACA Tennis Coach of the Year twice, the USTA Florida Junior Coach of the Year once, the Florida Dairy Farmers Tennis Coach of the Year six times, the NJFS United States Girls Coach of the Year once, the USPTR US High School Coach of the Year once, the Miami Herald Coach of the Year once, and the Miami Herald Tennis Coach of the Year four times. Kypriss also received the Miami Herald Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. He was inducted into the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2021 and the NHSACA Hall of fame in 2022.
Kypriss is married for 43 years to his wife Sherri. They have 3 daughters Michelle, Caroline, and Katlin and 3 grandsons, Eli, Wes and Aiden and one granddaughter Chloe.
