Freddie Williams Jr. is a dedicated servant of high school athletes in Florida, having served as a basketball official for 36 years in Miami-Dade County.
Williams, a Miami native, attended high school at Miami Northwestern, graduating in 1983. He then attended Miami-Dade Community College and pursued a degree in Criminal Justice.
Williams began his officiating career in 1987 with the Greater Miami Athletic Conference. Williams has made 18 appearances as a contest official at the FHSAA Basketball Finals throughout his career. He has also officiated the FHSAA Basketball Regional contests for the past 31 years.
Since 2000, Williams has served as the Booking Commissioner for the Miami-Dade Basketball Officials Association. As the Booking Commissioner, he has sent over 60 contest officials from Miami-Dade County to officiate at the FHSAA Basketball State Championships. He also serves as the FHSAA Lead Evaluator, which he has done for the past 22 years. While conducting his duties as the Lead Evaluator for the FHSAA, he has used his collegiate assignor duties in promoting over 150 officials from the high school level into collegiate officiating positions. One of Williams’ biggest accomplishments in the sport of basketball is that there are three officials (John Goble, Jacyn Goble, and Dedric Taylor) who started under his leadership, now officiating in the NBA.
Williams also coached high school football in Miami-Dade County for over 25 years, in which 20 of those years were coached at Monsignor Edward Pace High School. The school inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2019 as a football coach.
Williams has contributed as a State Series Evaluator for basketball and has coordinated officials training clinics for the FHSAA throughout the State of Florida over the past 20 years. Williams was honored as the FHSAA Basketball Official of the Year in 2016. Williams’ motivation and commitment was driven by providing student-athletes, coaches, and athletic administrators a positive experience through well-trained and professional basketball officiating.
