GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In partnership with
Visit Tallahassee Sports, the 2020 Florida High School Football State Championships will take place this week at
Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium on the campus of Florida State University.
For the the first time since 2002, all classifications of the Football State Championships will be contested in Tallahassee. In 2019, Gene Cox Stadium hosted classes 1A-3A. This week's four-day state championship event will consist of title games in eight total classifications (1A-8A) from Wednesday-Saturday. Of the competing teams, four are making a return appearance to defend their 2019 titles. The Class 7A matchup between St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) and Edgewater (Orlando), will also be a rematch of last year's 28-23 thrilling game, which saw Aquinas claim a record tieing eleventh state championship overall - a record they now share with The Bolles School (Jacksonville). Both St. Thomas Aquinas and Bolles will be in Tallahassee this year, as each aims to claim the record for most football state championships in Florida High School football history.
Additional interesting notes include perennial powers Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood) looking for the rare four-peat in Class 3A, and Champagnat (Hialeah) attempting to claim their third championship in four years in Class 2A. Finally, both Hawthorne and Lake Minneola will be making their first ever title game appearances in each of their school's history, an impressive feat for Lake Minneola, in their school's 10th year of existence.
