Football Classifications Available for 2022-23 & 2023-24

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The 2022-23 and 2023-24 FHSAA football classifications have been finalized and can be viewed via the following link:

WHAT ARE THE DISTRICT PLAY DATES?
District play dates are in the following order, depending on the number of teams in your district: 10th week, 8th week, 6th week, 4th week, 9th week, 7th week, 5th week, 3rd week, 2nd week, 1st week. District games shall not be scheduled on the 11th week. 

HOW MANY CLASSES ARE IN EACH DIVISION?
Metro: 4 Classifications (1M, 2M, 3M, 4M)
Suburban: 4 Classifications (1S, 2S, 3S, 4S)
Rural: 1 Classification (1R)
 
ARE COACHES ABLE TO SCHEDULE GAMES FOR THE 2022-23 FOOTBALL SEASON?
YES. Schools may begin scheduling now. A separate announcement will be sent when Home Campus is ready for football contracts.
 
ARE TEAMS ALLOWED TO PLAY OPPONENTS IN OTHER DIVISIONS AND CLASSIFICATIONS DURING THE REGULAR SEASON?
YES. A Metro team can play a Suburban or Rural team and vice versa, during the regular season. A team in 1M can also play teams in 2M, 3M, and 4M, as well as teams in 1S-4S.
 
ARE REGULAR SEASON DISTRICT CONTESTS REQUIRED?
For all Metro (1M-4M) and all Suburban (1S-4S) classifications, yes. The Rural (1R) classification does not have a required regular season district or region schedule.
 
HOW DO TEAMS ADVANCE IN THE FHSAA STATE SERIES?
Metro and Suburban

  • District Champions and the next 4 at-large teams based on FHSAA Power Ranking advance to the region bracket (8 per region)
1M/1S
  • District Champions and next 2 at-large teams based on FHSAA Power Ranking advance to the region bracket (4 per region)
Rural
1R
  • Top 6 teams based on FHSAA Power Ranking advance to region bracket (6 per region)
HOW ARE METRO AND SUBURBAN DEFINED?
Metro and Suburban were determined by the population density of each county in the state. Metro consists of the eight (8) most densely populated counties according to the documents provided in the football classification proposal, while Suburban consists of the remaining 59 counties.
 
WHAT ARE THE EIGHT (8) COUNTIES IDENTIFIED AS METRO?
Broward, Dade, Duval, Hillsborough, Orange, Palm Beach, Pinellas, Seminole
 
HOW IS THE NEW RURAL DIVISION DIFFERENT FROM THE PREVIOUS 1A-RURAL CLASSIFICATION?
There were no changes to the Rural division. It is essentially the same as the previous 1A-Rural class.
 
HOW MANY YEARS ARE IN THIS CLASSIFICATION CYCLE?
Two (2) years. 2022-23 and 2023-24.
 
WHEN WILL DISTRICT PLANNING MEETINGS BE HELD?
District planning meetings will take place March 23-30, 2022.

About the FHSAA
The Florida High School Athletic Association supervises and regulates interscholastic athletic programs for high school students at member public, private and charter schools. The organization also recognizes and honors academic achievement among student-athletes at almost 800 middle, junior and senior high schools statewide. Headquartered in Gainesville, it is the official governing body for interscholastic athletics in Florida.
